Bill overview
The Unlocking our Domestic LNG Potential Act of 2023 aims to increase the United States’ ability to export and import natural gas. It repeals certain restrictions within the Natural Gas Act that previously required the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) to consider the ‘public interest’ when approving natural gas exports and imports. The bill grants FERC exclusive authority over the approval process for facilities involved in these activities, such as liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminals. It also clarifies that the President retains the power to impose sanctions on countries designated as state sponsors of terrorism, even when considering natural gas trade.
