Bill overview
This bill aims to broaden the criteria for hospitals to be designated as ‘rural emergency hospitals’ (REHs) under Medicare. Currently, REHs must serve a specific population in a designated rural area. This legislation would expand the timeframe during which hospitals can qualify as REHs, starting January 1, 2015, allowing more rural hospitals to receive enhanced Medicare reimbursement rates. It effectively extends the opportunity for hospitals to meet the requirements for this designation.
