Bill overview
This bill, the Student Loan Deferment for Sex-Based Harassment Survivors Act, provides a pathway for federal student loan borrowers who have experienced sex-based harassment – including sexual assault, dating violence, domestic violence, and stalking – to defer their loan payments for up to three years. It allows the Department of Education to waive repayment requirements for grants and loans if a student’s attendance was interrupted due to such harassment, provided they report the incident to a designated individual. The bill also requires the Department of Education to submit a report to Congress within five years evaluating the program’s effectiveness.
