Bill overview
The Global Press Freedom Act establishes the Office of Press Freedom within the Department of State to protect and support journalists worldwide and advocate for press freedom globally. The office will coordinate efforts, denounce oppression, and recommend U.S. government responses to press freedom violations. It also mandates a press freedom curriculum for Foreign Service training and requires a GAO study on the implementation of the Daniel Pearl Freedom of the Press Act. This legislation reflects growing concerns about the decline of press freedom internationally.
