Bill overview
The Regional Immigration Diplomacy and Enforcement Act (RIDE Act) authorizes the Secretary of State to negotiate agreements with countries in the Western Hemisphere, primarily Mexico, Honduras, El Salvador, and Guatemala, to address illegal immigration and asylum claims. These agreements would require the participating countries to accept asylum seekers, process their claims, provide humanitarian protections, and cooperate with U.S. efforts to combat transnational crime. The bill also directs the State Department to study the feasibility of establishing a U.S. International Law Enforcement Center in southern Mexico to aid in immigration enforcement and combat related criminal activity, and to provide regular briefings to Congress on these efforts.
