Bill overview
The Securing the Border for Public Health Act of 2023 expands the authority of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to restrict the entry of people and goods from foreign countries. This allows HHS to prevent the introduction of communicable diseases and certain controlled substances, such as opioids and fentanyl, into the United States. The bill strengthens HHS’s ability to respond to public health threats at the border by enabling temporary suspensions of imports and migration from designated countries, with consultation from the Department of Justice. This aims to protect the health and safety of Americans.
