Bill overview
This bill, the Kidney Patient Access to Technologically Innovative and Essential Nephrology Treatments Act of 2023, delays a change to how Medicare pays for medications used to treat end-stage renal disease (ESRD). Currently, Medicare plans to start including payments for oral-only ESRD drugs into the payment system in 2025. This bill pushes back that implementation date until either January 1, 2033, or until an intravenous drug for the same purpose is approved by the FDA, giving dialysis facilities and patients more time to adjust.
