Bill overview
This bill establishes the Alabama Underwater Forest National Marine Sanctuary, protecting a unique area off the Alabama coast containing ancient cypress trees preserved for 50,000 to 70,000 years. The sanctuary prohibits activities that could damage these trees or the surrounding seabed, such as dredging, explosives, and cable laying. However, fishing, diving, and certain authorized oil and gas operations are permitted, and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) will develop a comprehensive management plan and an advisory council to oversee the sanctuary’s operations.
