Bill overview
The Pregnant Women in Custody Act aims to improve the health and safety of incarcerated women who are pregnant or giving birth. It requires the Bureau of Justice Statistics to collect data on the specific health needs of these women across federal, state, and local correctional systems. The Bureau of Prisons is mandated to provide appropriate healthcare services, including prenatal care, delivery support, and postpartum care, while limiting the use of restrictive housing and solitary confinement during pregnancy and recovery. Furthermore, the Act directs the Government Accountability Office to study the services and protections available to pregnant incarcerated women at the state and local levels, and establishes a process for reporting violations of restrictions on housing and restraints.
