Bill overview
The Substance Use Disorder Workforce Act aims to increase the number of residency positions available in hospitals that offer programs focused on addiction medicine, addiction psychiatry, or pain medicine. It provides for the distribution of up to 1,000 additional residency positions over five years (2024-2028), with hospitals competing for these positions based on their program quality and likelihood of filling them. Hospitals receiving these positions must ensure they utilize them for relevant programs and may have their positions reduced if they no longer meet the requirements. The bill also modifies Medicare payment rules to account for these new residency positions.
