Bill overview
The Veteran Overmedication and Suicide Prevention Act of 2023 directs the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to conduct an independent review of the deaths of veterans who died by suicide, violent death, or accidental death over the past five years. The VA will contract with the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine to analyze data on veterans’ medications, diagnoses, treatment approaches, and staffing levels to identify potential issues contributing to overmedication and suicide risk. The goal is to improve veteran safety and well-being through data-driven recommendations.
