Bill overview
The Gig Is Up Act aims to change how independent contractors are treated for tax purposes. It requires large businesses – those with over $100 million in annual revenue and contracting with at least 10,000 independent contractors – to withhold payroll taxes (Social Security and Medicare) from payments made to these contractors, similar to how employees are taxed. This legislation seeks to ensure that these workers are subject to the same tax obligations as traditional employees. The changes would take effect starting in 2025.
