Bill overview
This bill, the PAGER Act, aims to restrict U.S. financial support to the Lebanese Armed Forces until certain conditions regarding Hezbollah and Iranian influence in Lebanon are met. Specifically, the bill requires the Secretary of State to certify that Lebanon no longer recognizes Hezbollah as a legitimate political party, that Hezbollah’s presence is eliminated, and that the Lebanese Armed Forces are not coordinating with Hezbollah or the Iranian government. It also restricts aid to the United Nations Development Programme if it benefits Lebanese security forces and includes a reporting requirement on Hezbollah and Iranian influence within Lebanon’s government.
