Bill overview
This bill clarifies how federal crimes without a specific punishment outlined in law are to be treated. Currently, if a federal statute doesn't specify a punishment for a misdemeanor, it’s unclear how it should be handled. This legislation establishes that such a misdemeanor would be considered a Class A misdemeanor, providing a standard level of punishment. This aims to ensure consistent sentencing for offenses where the law is silent on penalties.
