Bill overview
The Primates Act of 2024 prohibits the National Institutes of Health (NIH) from conducting or supporting research that causes significant pain or distress to nonhuman primates. It also requires the NIH to publish a detailed annual report on its primate research, including project details, costs, and efforts to phase out primate use. Furthermore, the General Accounting Office (GAO) will conduct a study to assess the NIH’s efforts to reduce and replace primate testing and make recommendations for improvement.
