Bill overview
The Inventor Diversity for Economic Advancement Act, or IDEA Act, requires the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) to voluntarily collect demographic information – including gender, race, veteran status, and other categories determined by the Director – from patent inventors. This data will be kept confidential and separate from patent applications, and the USPTO will publish annual reports detailing patent application and issuance trends broken down by inventor demographics and technology categories. The goal is to identify and address potential disparities in the patent system.
