Bill overview
The Honoring Our Fallen Heroes Act of 2023 expands benefits under the Public Safety Officers’ Benefits Program (PSOB) to include public safety officers who develop certain cancers, such as bladder, lung, and mesothelioma, as a result of their work. The bill establishes a list of ‘exposure-related cancers’ and creates a process for the Bureau of Justice Assistance to periodically review and expand this list based on scientific evidence. It also clarifies that a diagnosis of these cancers is presumed to be a ‘personal injury’ sustained in the line of duty if specific exposure criteria are met, and applies to officers who developed these cancers on or after January 1, 2023.
