Bill overview
The Helping Our Heroes Act allows taxpayers who don’t itemize deductions to claim a charitable deduction for volunteer work performed by firefighters, emergency medical personnel, and rescue workers. Individuals can deduct up to $20 per hour of qualified service, with a maximum of 300 hours per year. The bill also defines what constitutes ‘qualified services’ and includes an inflation adjustment to the deduction amount starting in 2024. It also clarifies that services performed while a member of Congress do not qualify.
