Bill overview
The Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument Access Act allows the Department of the Interior to expand the boundaries of the monument in Maine through purchase, donation, or exchange, but prohibits the use of eminent domain. It also permits the Secretary to allow existing outdoor recreation activities, including the gathering of fiddlehead ferns, on newly acquired land, while allowing for limited restrictions if necessary. The bill requires collaboration with local communities and Tribal governments to educate the public about the monument’s history and management, and allows for noncommercial timber harvests and the acquisition of up to 10 acres for visitor services.
