Bill overview
The Insurance Data Protection Act limits the ability of federal agencies to collect data directly from insurance companies. Specifically, it prohibits the Federal Insurance Office and the Office of Financial Research from subpoenaing insurance data. The bill requires financial regulators to seek data from other regulators or publicly available sources first, and if those options are unavailable, they must comply with the Paperwork Reduction Act before directly requesting information from an insurance company. It also strengthens confidentiality protections for data shared with regulators.
