Bill overview
The Syria Detainee and Displaced Persons Act renews a requirement for an executive branch coordinator to manage the U.S. government’s response to ISIS detainees and displaced individuals in Syria. It expands the coordinator’s role to include addressing the needs of displaced individuals who are not ISIS members and requires the State Department to submit an interagency strategy for camps housing these populations. The bill also mandates repatriation and, where appropriate, prosecution or reintegration of ISIS-affiliated individuals, with the goal of closing these camps and preventing the resurgence of ISIS.
