Bill overview
The Federal Prison Oversight Act establishes a system for increased oversight of the Bureau of Prisons (BOP). It creates an Inspector General within the Department of Justice to conduct risk-based inspections of BOP facilities, allowing for both announced and unannounced visits. The bill also establishes an Ombudsman to receive complaints, investigate issues related to incarcerated people and staff, and recommend actions, while prohibiting BOP retaliation against those involved in oversight activities. Finally, it mandates a risk score system for facilities and outlines procedures for reporting inspection findings.
