Bill overview
The Disarm Hate Act amends federal law to prevent individuals convicted of a misdemeanor hate crime or receiving an enhanced sentence for such a crime from possessing firearms. Specifically, it defines ‘convicted of a misdemeanor hate crime’ and ‘received an enhanced hate crime misdemeanor sentence’ and prohibits the sale, shipment, or transport of firearms to these individuals, unless certain conditions are met, such as expungement of the conviction or restoration of civil rights without a specific prohibition on firearm ownership. This legislation aims to reduce the risk of violence by limiting access to firearms for those who have demonstrated a propensity for hate-motivated offenses.
