Bill overview
The FREED Act amends the Fentanyl Sanctions Act to strengthen penalties for foreign individuals and entities involved in the production, trafficking, or financing of fentanyl. It expands the scope of sanctions, including those applicable to foreign agencies and family members of key individuals. The bill also directs the Treasury Secretary to identify and sanction specific Chinese entities linked to fentanyl production and distribution, and to assess the need for additional regulations to combat money laundering related to illicit fentanyl financing. Finally, it encourages international cooperation to track the movement of illicit funds.
