Bill overview
The BRIDGE Act aims to support democratic forces in exile from Russia and Belarus and to codify existing sanctions related to the Russian Federation. It establishes a ‘Russians in Exile Affairs Unit’ to coordinate US government efforts, provide assistance to exiled individuals, and address challenges they face. The bill also seeks to prevent wrongful detentions, support independent media and civil society, and strengthen USAGM Ukraine initiatives, while incorporating provisions related to Belarus’s role in supporting Russia’s war in Ukraine. Finally, it includes measures to recognize expired Russian passports and potentially designate Belarusian citizens as ‘homeless nationals’ for visa processing.
