Bill overview
This bill, the Stand Your Ground Act of 2023, creates new legal defenses for individuals in federal criminal cases. It allows someone to use non-deadly force in self-defense if they reasonably believe they are facing imminent unlawful force, and it removes the requirement to retreat before using force. Additionally, it permits the use of deadly force to prevent imminent death or great bodily harm or to stop a forcible felony, again without a duty to retreat, provided the individual is not engaged in a crime and is legally present.
