Bill overview
This bill, the Protecting Immigrant Victims of Domestic Violence Act, creates a pathway to immigration status for abused spouses and children who are dependent on another immigrant’s status (a ‘principal alien’). It amends existing immigration law to allow these individuals to obtain immigrant visas or adjust their status to permanent residency if they have experienced battery or extreme cruelty by their principal alien, provided they are accompanying or following the principal alien. Eligible individuals will also receive employment authorization and the ability to renew or extend their status.
