Bill overview
The Safety From Violence for Healthcare Employees Act (SAVE Act) aims to protect hospital staff from violence. It expands federal criminal law to include assaults on hospital personnel performing their duties, with penalties up to 20 years in prison for offenses involving weapons or causing serious injury. The Act also provides a defense for individuals with disabilities whose conduct is a result of their disability. Finally, it directs the Government Accountability Office (GAO) to study the impact of the law on workplace violence in healthcare.
