Bill overview
The Fentanyl Trafficking Prevention Act aims to hold online platforms accountable for facilitating the distribution of illicit drugs. It creates a new category of ‘covered providers’ – large social media companies – and allows the Attorney General to pursue both criminal and civil actions against them if they knowingly or intentionally enable violations related to the distribution of opioids, cocaine, or methamphetamine. The bill also includes provisions protecting encryption technologies and preventing providers from monitoring user communications.
