Bill overview
The Ensuring American Security and Protecting Afghan Allies Act provides a path to permanent residency for Afghan nationals who supported the U.S. mission in Afghanistan and addresses related issues. It offers conditional permanent resident status to individuals who were lawfully admitted to the U.S. before the bill’s enactment or paroled into the U.S. between July 30, 2021, and the bill’s enactment, subject to certain security and inadmissibility checks. The bill also creates a special immigrant visa category for the parents and siblings of U.S. military members and designates certain Afghan nationals as priority refugees for humanitarian concerns. Finally, it establishes a process for responding to congressional inquiries regarding Afghan applications and strengthens the U.S. Refugee Admissions Program.
