Bill overview
The CLEAR Path Act aims to strengthen restrictions on former government officials who may have conflicts of interest after leaving their positions, particularly those working for foreign governments. It expands existing rules to cover more senior officials and those working on behalf of ‘countries of concern’ as defined by the State Department. The bill also establishes a process for Congress to modify the list of ‘countries of concern’ and includes a sunset provision that will eventually eliminate these restrictions for officials appointed after five years. Essentially, it’s designed to prevent former officials from leveraging their government connections to benefit foreign entities.
