Bill overview
This bill, the "BADGES for Native Communities Act," aims to improve the response to missing and murdered Indigenous persons and enhance safety within Native communities. It requires the Department of Justice to establish a grant program for tribes to improve their investigative capabilities and works with the Department of Health and Human Services to provide culturally appropriate mental health resources for law enforcement. The bill also mandates a demonstration program for background checks for BIA law enforcement officers and directs the GAO to conduct studies on evidence handling and processing by federal agencies. Finally, it establishes coordination between HHS and the DOJ to ensure access to counseling resources for tribal and BIA law enforcement.
