Bill overview
The BADGES for Native Communities Act aims to improve responses to missing and murdered Indigenous persons and enhance safety within Native communities. It requires the Department of Justice to establish a grant program for tribes to improve their investigative capabilities, and the Bureau of Indian Affairs to implement a demonstration program for background checks on law enforcement personnel. The bill also directs the GAO to study evidence handling practices and mandates coordination between the Department of Health and Human Services and tribal law enforcement agencies to provide counseling resources.
