Bill overview
This bill, the SAWMILL Act, aims to support American sawmills and wood processing facilities by establishing a loan guarantee program. The program, administered by the Department of Agriculture and in coordination with the Department of the Interior, will provide loans to eligible entities – primarily sawmills in rural areas – to expand, reopen, or improve their operations. Specifically, the bill directs the Secretaries to identify Federal land suitable for ecological restoration and to offer loan guarantees if a sawmill’s presence reduces the cost of vegetation removal projects on that land.
