Terms of Service

1. Acceptance of terms

By accessing or using the Civik platform (“Civik,” “the Service”), operated by Civik Platform (“we,” “us,” or “our”), you agree to be bound by these Terms of Service. If you do not agree, do not use the Service.

2. Eligibility

You must be at least 13 years of age to create an account. By registering, you represent that you meet this requirement. Constituent features that involve district verification require a valid U.S. residential address.

3. Account responsibilities

You are responsible for maintaining the security of your account credentials. You agree to provide accurate information when creating your account and to update it if it changes. Each individual may maintain only one account.

You are responsible for all activity that occurs under your account. If you suspect unauthorized access, notify us immediately at security@civik.us.

4. Acceptable use

Civik is a platform for civic engagement. You agree not to:

• Provide false identity or address information to gain access to districts you do not reside in
• Create multiple accounts to amplify stances or manipulate aggregated data
• Submit stances or survey responses using automated scripts or bots
• Harass, threaten, or abuse other users, legislators, or staff members
• Attempt to access data belonging to other users or legislative offices without authorization
• Use the platform for commercial solicitation, advertising, or spam
• Reverse-engineer, scrape, or systematically extract data from the platform
• Interfere with the operation, security, or availability of the Service

We reserve the right to suspend or terminate accounts that violate these rules, with or without notice.

5. Stances and user content

When you submit a legislative stance (support or oppose), that position is recorded and becomes part of the aggregated district sentiment visible to legislators. Stances are treated as part of the civic record and may be retained in anonymized, aggregate form even after account deletion.

You retain ownership of any content you submit (comments, survey responses, messages). By submitting content, you grant Civik a non-exclusive, royalty-free license to use, display, and aggregate that content as part of the platform’s civic engagement functions.

6. Legislative data accuracy

Civik syncs legislative data from official state APIs and public records. While we make every effort to ensure accuracy and timeliness, we do not guarantee that all legislative data is complete, current, or error-free.

Legislative data on Civik is provided for informational purposes. It does not constitute legal advice. For authoritative legislative text, consult the official records of your state legislature.

7. Intellectual property

The Civik platform, including its design, code, and original content, is the property of Civik Platform and is protected by applicable intellectual property laws. Legislative data sourced from public records remains in the public domain.

8. Limitation of liability

The Service is provided “as is” and “as available” without warranties of any kind, express or implied. We do not warrant that the Service will be uninterrupted, secure, or error-free.

To the maximum extent permitted by law, Civik Platform shall not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages arising from your use of the Service, including but not limited to loss of data, loss of reputation, or reliance on legislative information displayed on the platform.

9. Termination

You may delete your account at any time through your account settings. Upon deletion, your personal information will be removed in accordance with our Privacy Policy.

We may suspend or terminate your account if you violate these Terms, with notice when practical. In the event of termination for cause, you will be notified of the reason.

10. Governing law

These Terms are governed by the laws of the State of Oregon, without regard to conflict-of-law provisions. Any disputes arising from these Terms or your use of the Service shall be resolved in the state or federal courts located in Multnomah County, Oregon.

11. Changes to these terms

We may modify these Terms from time to time. Material changes will be communicated through the platform or by email at least 30 days before they take effect. Your continued use of Civik after the effective date of revised Terms constitutes acceptance.
